Meet Sarah Long
Sarah Long, PhD
I have been a practicing genetic counsellor since I started at King Edward Memorial Hospital in 2008 with Genetic Services of WA - now Genetic Health WA.
I am passionate about empowering patients through genetic counselling, which combines information-giving with psychosocial care for people undergoing genetic diagnosis for themselves, for their children, or for a pregnancy. I have clinical experience in the familial cancer field as well as adult and prenatal genetics.
I am also very interested in research and I am the Senior Genetic Counsellor for the PreGen project - implementing prenatal genomic testing in pregnancy when something is identified on ultrasound that may have a genetic cause.
My supervision style involves reflective practice and active listening to develop career skills of genetic counsellors. I completed the ASGC supervision workshop in 2023.
I also enjoy mentoring people and am involved with the UWA Mentorship program as a mentor.
I recently graduated with my PhD from the University of Western Australia in July 2025.

"This year marks my fourth year under Sarah’s supervision. Sarah has supported me throughout my journey from working as an Associate Genetic Counsellor to achieving the Genetic Counsellor Certification. Her supervision has provided me with a safe space to reflect on my clinical experiences, which has inspired me to make continuous improvements and incorporate new skills.
Sarah’s passion for genetic counselling has influenced how I work as a professional. With her guidance, I have received strong performance appraisals from my clinical supervisors. I strongly recommend Sarah as a Genetic Counselling Supervisor. Her support, insight, and dedication have played a big part in my development and drive to do well in the field."
